The global economy is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, redefining the nature of work and the skills required to thrive. This shift has intensified the demand for advanced digital and technical competencies, leaving many regions, particularly in developing economies, facing a significant skills gap. As of 2024, the global employment landscape reflects a complex interplay of growth and persistent challenges:
- Total Employment: Approximately 3.6 billion people are employed worldwide, marking a significant increase from 2.23 billion in 1991.
- Unemployment Rate: The global unemployment rate has stabilized at a historic low of 5% in 2024, with projections indicating it will remain at this level through 2025.
- Youth Unemployment: Despite overall improvements, youth unemployment remains a concern, with a rate of 12.6% in 2024, equating to nearly 65 million young individuals without work.
These figures underscore the ongoing need for targeted policies and initiatives to address employment disparities and support vulnerable groups in the labor market. According to the 2024 Q2 Labour Force Survey of National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR), unemployment rate in Rwanda stood at 16.8%, with higher rates among females (19.8%) compared to males (14.1%), and more pronounced among youth aged 16-30 years (20.5%) than adults (14.1%). The country’s youthful population and government’s proactive stance on digital transformation provide fertile ground for targeted interventions that empower youth and boost economic development.
The Digital Talent Programme: Closing the Skills Gap
Digital Talent Program (DTP) is a training program initiated by the IHS Rwanda Ltd in partnership with the Ministry of ICT and Innovation (MINICT) and Rwanda ICT Chamber to cultivate a digitally adept young workforce capable of navigating the evolving job market.
